historical commentary:
the painter jules laurens, a fervent admirer of victor hugo, traveled to jersey to meet him. According to a drawing of the breakwater (inv. 2007. 0. 10) dated march 30 and he returned to paris on april 4 where he wrote to victor hugo to thank him for his welcome. Adèle hugo, who notes nothing in “le journal de l’exil” after march 23, only mentions her visit to the painter jules laurens on april 1, 1855 (he then shows sketches he made in jersey). She then specifies: "mr. Laurens spends the day drawing a drawing of my father's room. " this drawing, offered to victor hugo, receives a family-made frame, undoubtedly made by madame hugo for the velvet covering and, perhaps, by victor hugo himself for the copper nail patterns. It is possible that this framing was only carried out during the development of hauteville house in guernsey. In his 'description of hauteville house' (bnf, naf 16964), charles hugo mentions in 'madame hugo's room: various paintings on the walls - among others: victor hugo's room at marine terrace, jersey. . . '. Remaining in the family collections up to jean hugo's heirs, this drawing was acquired by the museum during the "hugo, victor, georges, jean and the others collection" sale on april 4, 2012.
