The Carrying of the Cross. Hours of Etienne Chevalier., Jean Fouquet, circa 1452-1460

Christ carrying his cross, helped by simon of cyrene and threatened by soldiers, in a procession leaving a city and climbing a hill. Behind christ stands the virgin. In the background is depicted judas committing suicide, hanging from a tree. The sainte-chapelle dominates the city in the distance. In the foreground are depicted two figures, one of whom is a woman, forging tools that will serve as instruments of the passion of christ. Above them is a cartouche containing a letter "d" in which is depicted saint veronica presenting the holy face. The text on the right has been hidden.
