The picture is divided into a heavenly and an earthly sphere. Mary and the donor stand opposite each other as half-figures without eye contact. The madonna occupies the place of honour to the right of the young donor, dressed in a fur-trimmed cloak and red beret, who can be identified by his coat of arms as the lübeck councillor hinrich lipperade. The madonna is traditionally dressed in a veil and blue cloak and also wears a small diadem and a precious brocade dress. Mary's background consists of a cloth of honour made of red and gold brocade, behind the donor a tree-lined landscape opens up behind a stone arch. Towards the viewer, the picture space is delimited by a narrow parapet strip that adjoins the lower frame strip in a spatial-illusionistic way and connects the heavenly and earthly spheres. On the parapet stands the naked christ child blessing the donor, who is protectively embraced by mary's left hand. In her right hand, mary holds a small red apple as a reference to the fall of man. Above the worshiper's hands folded in prayer, the intercessory formula "o virgo mater dei memento mei" (o virgin, mother of god, remember me) can be read on a scroll. The coat of arms can be attributed to the lipperade family, who provided several lübeck councillors towards the end of the 15th century. Object Type: painting, donor portrait. Genre: religious art.
