Town hall known as capitole, place du capitole. 1833. Plate 23, overview of the door of the vis tower before its demolition; characters in the foreground. Extract from an album of 74 plates from "picturesque and romantic journeys in ancient france. Languedoc. Volume 1" by messrs. Nodier, taylor and de cailleux. Additional details in 'monumental history of the town hall of toulouse' (jules chalande): "in 1537, sébastien bouguereau resumed and continued the work of the tour de la vis, and built the entrance door with the 8 coats of arms of the capitouls of 1536-37 [. . . ] in 1542, sébastien bouguereau resumed and completed the staircase of the tour de la vis which was unfinished, and overloaded the ornamentation and the entablature of its entrance door to place the coat of arms of the capitouls of 1541-42 [. . . ] it is probably in 1559 that the two superimposed entablatures of the door, each already bearing a capitular armorial, are overlaid with a 3rd frieze, with the coat of arms of the capitouls in charge". Jules chalande, however, points out the inaccuracy of this drawing (like others from the voyagespicturesques. . . ), in particular the coats of arms of the capitouls seem here to be replaced by faces or garlands. Date: 1833. Medium: lithography, paper, print. Collection: Archives municipales de Toulouse.
