Henry bacon, a drawing of the french artist édouard frère (1819-1886) in his "sketching sledge", from bacon's 1883 book parisian art and artists, p. 117. [1] as bacon explains, these novel carriages, or "miniature ateliers," were adopted by members of the art colony in écouen to allow them to paint outdoors in snowy weather. They included a charcoal foot-stove to warm the artist's woolen-slippered feet; wooden shoes were put on for walking in the snow. Date: 1883.
