iconographic description:
lobau was made marshal of france and grand cross of the legion of honor on july 30, 1831. It is to celebrate this appointment that “la caricature” offers a pl. In honor of lobau. He is represented looking proud (haughty gaze, left hand on hip, right bust), holding his fleurdelysé marshal's baton in his right hand and riding, a clyster syringe: an allusion to the use he made of fire hoses to disperse bonapartist demonstrators in may 1831 in paris. He flies over paris. We recognize the vendôme column (place vendôme was the place where the demonstrators were dispersed) topped with the tricolor flag. It was following this act of repression at place vendôme that louis-philippe decided to appoint lobau marshal. The explanation speaks of it ironically: “this glorious feat of arms”.
