The kaiyo-maru was built in a dordrecht shipyard on behalf of the japanese government. She was the largest wooden vessel ever launched in the netherlands. A group of japanese naval officers was sent to the netherlands to follow the construction of the ship. Most of them returned to japan on board the kaiyo-maru,. The ship became the flagship of the japanese navy, but was lost in the bay of ezashi during a storm in november 1868. In 1974, a project was started to salvage the kaiyo-maru. A concrete replica of the ship and many objects brought to the surface from the wreck can now be viewed on the site where the ship was lost. Object Type: photograph. Date: 1866.
