historical commentary:
preparatory drawing for the 68th painting of the "historical paintings of the french revolution". From 1790, the chained slaves, part of the statue of louis xiv, were transferred to the courtyard of the louvre and protected. The statue itself was overturned and melted down in 1792. Cf. Hould "l'image de la révolution française", 1989, p255,256. This drawing is the last in the series for "historical paintings. . . ". Prieur will be guillotined on may 6, 1795
