historical commentary:
this study of a young man was taken up successively by antoine watteau in three of his compositions. This is a preparatory drawing, executed around 1716, for "pastoral pleasure" (chantilly, musée condé, inv. Pe 370): in the painting, the character holds a long stick in his right hand, evocative of pilgrimages to cythera, and in his left he embraces a young woman. Watteau took up this idyll, changing some details in the heads and costumes, for a pastoral style painting, "the shepherds" (berlin, schloss charlottenburg, inv. Gki 5303). The attitude of the legs and right hand of "the seated man" from the cognacq-jay museum is finally found in a character from "peaceful love" (around 1718, berlin, schloss charlottenburg, inv. Gki 5337). Mode of acquisition: legacy
