description
this equestrian portrait of a prince is from the court of sawar, a small state in ajmer established by the mughal emperor jahangir. Initially, painting from this court showed strong subimperial taste, but by the mid-eighteenth century the sawar workshops developed the distinct colored drawing style seen here. Date: mid-18th century.
