The former german battleship 'baden' listing and under fire as a gunnery target, possibly on the dean sand, spithead, 1921 inscribed 'german battleship baden used as a target for 15 inch shells' and signed by the artist, lower left. Mount measurements and residue show this was previously framed as a finished item. Here the 'baden' is taking a hit on the starboard superstructure, listing in that direction (aided by the weight of her guns bearing to starboard) and with two other small and presumably naval vessels to the left - neither apparently the monitor firing at her. She is moored by her port anchor. Wyllie does not give the location on this drawing but it may be on the dean sand, as in paf1876. For the circumstances of this ship's internment and subsequent use as a british gunnery target, 1918-21, see paf1872. See also pae2736, pae3133, paf1873, and paf18767. Date: 1921. Dimensions: Sheet: 296 x 456 mm. Collection: Fine art.
