Siège du château de Brest

Siège du château de Brest

The oldest known representations of the castle illustrate the siege of brest by the duke of lancaster in 1386. Chronicles of jean froissart. Manuscript from the 15th century. The scene is not realistic, neither in the phases of the combat, nor in the equipment used (bombs on wheels). The sea does not even appear in the landscape. This miniature nevertheless symbolizes the strategic importance of the place of brest at the end of the middle ages as well as the bitterness of the struggles for its control. Date: 15th century.
