Titelblad] AFRICA

Johannes visscher (1636- after 1696) engraved this allegorical print, representing the african continent. The print forms one of a series of six title pages designed by nicolaas berchem (1620-1683). This title page was meant to be used for joan blaeus (1598-1673) atlas maior, but the print was not published in that world atlas. Other prints of this page were used in atlases by a colleague of blaeu: pieter mortier (1661-1711). Object Type: map. Date: 17th century. Place of creation: Amsterdam. Dimensions: 44 x 30 cm.
