Iconographic description: right: in front of a temple, apotheosis of napoleon i on a quadriga ascending towards the sky, preceded by the imperial eagle holding lightning between its claws, crowned by immortality and guided by fame holding a palm in each hand; at the bottom, from left to right: france raising its arms to the sky, the rock of the island of saint helena, disorder pursued by justice emerging from behind an altar; reverse: crowned arms of the city of paris held on the left by justice, holding a sword in the right hand and, on the right, by prosperity holding a cornucopia in the left hand; below, a large banner on which is inscribed the city's motto: "flvctvat nec mergitur". Historical commentary: this medal is inspired by the painting on the apotheosis of napoleon i that the painter ingres composed for the ceiling of the salon of napoleon iii at the hôtel de ville in paris. This painting did not survive the fire of the town hall by the commune on may 24, 1871.
