Wilhelm von gloeden (1856-1931), land of fire. One of the most famous and republished images by gloeden. It shows a view upon the vesuvius from posillipo (naples) from the terrace at villa barbaja used by both gloeden and by his cousin wilhelm von pluschow. The background vesuvius was heavily retouched, almost repainted, on the glass negative. Catalogue number: g 0045 of the special size catalogue (cm 28,5x38,1). This print contains the left side, usually sliced away because a model moved during the shot. Among the models features pasquale, from taormina, who was brought along by gloeden and who on the occasion posed also for his cousin, wilhelm von plueschow. Which allows us to date this set of images, since pasquale posed in a roman villa at pompaeii opened to visitors in 1896, for a set which was printed in march 1898. Which implies the images featuring him in naples date either from 1896 or from summer 1897. Date: before 1895.
