caricature. Priest disguised as a candle snuffer holding a paper with the inscription "conser / vate[ur]". In the background, other men in extinguishers. Historical commentary:
under the restoration, the extinguisher was a caricature motif very popular in liberal circles. The editors of the newspaper le nain jaune (1814-1815) imagined ridiculing the men in power and the supporters of the clergy by awarding them the order of the extinguisher, denouncing the obscurantism and blindness of royalist circles. This lithograph is one of devéria's rare works with an anticlerical and satirical spirit. Mode of acquisition: legacy
