Field post letters from hans koch, vienna, world war ii, eastern front, 1922-1945 previous letter (11/1942) letter no. 108 (11/04/1942) next letter (11/04/1942) east, 4 november 1942 my dear mum! i am sending you my warmest greetings again. Today i have arrived back at my old unit after an 11-day journey. Not many of my old comrades are here anymore. The “sergeant” greeted us happily. But a lot has changed since i left. The positions have been greatly expanded. We don’t have to lie in snow holes like we used to; there are immaculate bunkers here, with stoves and wooden beds. The russians are very calm here. You’d almost think it’s peacetime. Now and then a shot is fired, but that’s completely harmless. There’s just a lot of digging and building going on here. We can safely await winter here. The weather is [yes, uninvited, very nice, the sun is still shining very warmly. ]. Date: 4 November 1942.
