Study of HMS 'Renown', from astern, flying the Royal (Standard RMG PV2654, William Lionel Wyllie, 1920

Study of hms 'renown', from astern, flying the royal (standard inscribed 'renown' by the artist, lower right. This vigorous colour sketch is a stern view of the superstructure of the battlecruiser 'renown' (1916), showing her flying the royal standard and dressed overall, with the prince (later edward viii) on board for his 1920-21 tour of the usa and australasia. It was no doubt done at portsmouth just before she left, since she did not sail dressed overall. The hull is is not included in this drawing which only shows the structure down to deck level, but includes the naval white ensign flying astern. Wyllie did a large oil painting of 'renown' leaving portsmouth for the tour, now in the royal naval museum there. In that she is shown from ahead, based on a related drawing (paf2133). He also did a separate etching of her departure, from broad on the starboard bow; see paf0734. Date: 1920. Dimensions: 353 mm x 252 mm. Collection: Fine art.
