iconographic description:
title sheet bringing together information relating to the first part of wattier's marital scale, illusions. A wreath of flowers adorns the center of this title page. The designer emile wautier suggests following the evolution of a couple, by establishing two series of eight illustrations – i. Illusions, ii. The realities - where each corresponds to a level, either ascending or descending, of a stage in the lives of the two lovers. This theme, dear to balzac, is found in one of his first writings: the physiology of marriage. “i know the world, and it has no more illusions for me. My holiest friendships have been betrayed. I exchange a look of immense depth with my wife, and the slightest of our words is a dagger that cuts through our lives from one side to the other. »
