Here is what the newspaper critic said about this painting (“salon de 1840 (3rd article)”, journal des artistes, march 22, 1840, p. 182)
"(. . . ) let's return to the good paintings: here are three small, well-painted compositions, where the interest of the subject equals the execution; it is firstly, the last resource; a young girl, to soften the last moments of her old dying mother, sells to a jew her golden cross, the only jewel that remains to her, and which she gets rid of with regret, because undoubtedly it is the last memory that her fiancé left her; then, it is the woodcutter who, conquering a wolf ready to devour her child, thanks heaven for her victory; these two pretty subjects, as well as the washerwomen, do honor to the easy and elegant talent of miss henry; she has again exhibited a portrait of a woman, remarkable for the vigor of the brush, and especially for the beautiful arrangement of the head. ". Object Type: print. Date: 14 June 1840.
