pope pius ii piccolomini convened the council of mantua in 1459, and preached the crusade against the turks, after the capture of constantinople in 1453. This engraving reproduces part of the decor of the libreria piccolomini, library of cardinal francesco piccolomini (future pius iii) located in the duomo of siena and dedicated to episodes in the life of his uncle, pope pius ii. Historical commentary:
set of engravings which reproduce the decor of the libreria piccolomini, founded in 1495 by cardinal francesco piccolomini todeschini, future pius iii, to preserve the library of his uncle eneas silvio piccolomini, pius ii.
