"giovanni soranzo (1520 - 1603) was an important venetian politician and one of the major architects of the triple alliance between venice, spain and the papal states against the turks, which led to victory in the battle of lepanto in 1571. He was ambassador of the serenissima in spain in 1565, in france at the court of henry iii and in rome during the papacy of pius v, gregory xiii and clement viii. Bertina suida manning first identified the present painting as a portrait of giovanni soranzo by comparing it with two other portraits of the same model, one of which, preserved in the bernay museum in france, bears the inscription with soranzo's name. The scholar dates the present painting to around 1570, during the venetian ambassador's stay in rome, as indicated by the presence of the view of castel sant'angelo in the background. [1].
