a middle-aged man, very straight and stiff, draped in a long white coat and glasses on his nose, receives the homage of an employee who bows before him and hands him a conical loaf of sugar. A group of four men witness the scene. Actor, playwright and designer, henry monnier helped illustrate la comédie humaine. His engravings of administrative morals, and especially his play scenes from bureaucratic life, clearly inspired balzac for his novel la femme supérieure, renamed les employés. The same references to the customs of their time often inspired the two artists in parallel on numerous subjects as we can see in the following extract: "the beautiful grocer fell asleep at these words, and naturally this protector kept the most profound silence. A few loaves of sugar, a few bottles of good liqueurs given to the citizen duplay, would have saved descoings. This little accident proves that in revolution, it is as dangerous to employ honest people as rogues for your salvation: we must only rely on ourselves.
