A 'tiger' being shot on Batavia, Matthijs Balen, 1724

A tiger being shot on batavia. The plate is taken from the work 'oud en nieuw oost-indien' by francois valentyn. The tiger had escaped from his stall and wandered about freely inside batavia castle until it was shot. A striking detail is that the 'teiger' depicted is spotted. Various figures on the square are depicted running away in fear. The socalled tiger is probably a leopard. Date: 1724. Dimensions: height: 18 cm (7 in); width: 15 cm (5.9 in). Medium: engraving on paper. Collection: Koninklijke Bibliotheek. AMH-7249-KB A 'tiger' being shot on Batavia
