Naples - carnival of 1711 between largo di castello and largo di palazzo. Author unknown (mistakenly attributed to alessandro d'anna). (san martino museum, naples). The painting shows the old palazzo dei viceroy and (to its left) the old entrance to the teatro san carlo. The official date of 1711 is questioned due to the workmanship of the painting, the style, the clothing, the subject, the carnival celebration, etc. Leonardo di mauro decided to date the buildings to the first forty years of the 18th century; the characters, clothes and layout should instead be from the end of the eighteenth century. It is therefore assumed that the anonymous author of the painting copied the buildings from a print or drawing from the early 18th century and then animated it with more current characters from the late 18th century. The date of 1771 has been proposed. Date: 1711 ? 1771 ?.
