ernest coquelin, known as coquelin cadet (1848-1909), member of the comédie-française. Full-length portrait. Coquelin, dressed in a dark suit, is seated in an interior, next to a fireplace. Behind him, two paintings. Historical commentary:
ernest coquelin, known as coquelin cadet (boulogne-sur-mer, 1848; suresnes, 1909) won the first prize for comedy at the conservatoire in 1867 and was hired at the odéon. He then moved to the comédie-française, played at the variétés (1875-1876) and returned in 1876 to the comédie-française where he was accepted as a member in 1879. With his caricatured performance, secondary roles suited him better. Ernest coquelin's brother, constant coquelin, known as cocquelin the elder (1841-1909), was also an actor at the comédie-française from 1860, but is especially famous for the triumph he won in the role of cyrano de bergerac by edmond rostand.
