iconographic description:
in a peasant interior, louis-philippe, depicted as a farmer, plucks a rooster for the benefit of the king of the united kingdom, william iv, in front of a fireplace. He does not see that france, represented by a young woman, is being attacked by three foreigners (the sovereigns of the holy alliance: nicholas i of russia, frederick william iii of prussia and francis i of austria). Next, the yoke of the “state of siege” dominating various small figures huddled in a bundle, above which the “guizotine” is placed. A pair of scissors bearing the inscription: “cutting of the // people”, a van containing the words: “mayors”, “prefects”, “sub-prefects”… like dirty laundry, newspapers favorable to governments are spread out (débats, constitutionnel…). Above the fireplace, a map showing the “fr. [france]” narrow facing the countries of the holy alliance “austria”, “prussia” and “russia” next to which sits the bust of napoleon. Presence of a salt shaker embodying the taxes weighing on the people. A “for rent” sign hangs on the left wall, above a soldier’s uniform. Below, a cane from which hangs the figure of a small national guard upside down (certainly a metaphor for the government's desire to win the opinion of this category). This pl. Is charles philipon's vision of the government, following his arrest: the king renounces republican principles and does not realize that foreign nations are flouting france and taking advantage of its weakness to expand. louis-philippe i, king of the french
