oil on canvas65. 1 x 54. 1 cm
the painting is a copy of an altar painting by titian from ss. Giovanni e paolo in venice, which was shown in paris from 1798 to 1815 at the louvre, then called the musée napoléon. In 1867, titian's painting was destroyed by fire. Géricault has made some changes to the original: instead of the arched upper end, he has chosen a right-angled image boundary, he has widened the composition and slightly varied the attacker's hand. After the artist's death in 1824, delacroix acquired the painting from his estate, along with other copies of géricault after old masters. Object Type: painting. Date: circa 1814. Dimensions: height: 65 cm (25.5 in) ; width: 54 cm (21.2 in). Medium: oil on canvas. Collection: Kunstmuseum Basel. Géricault - Le martyre de saint Pierre (d’après Titien), um 1814
