'Lough Swilly' RMG PW2134, William Lionel Wyllie, 1889

'lough swilly' in 1889 wyllie spent some time with the navy during manoeuvres in lough swilly on the north-west coast of county donegal, ireland. Sixty-nine of the watercolours he produced were exhibited later that year in 'the queen's navy', at the fine art society, london. During the time that he was there wyllie produced a number of landscape studies with very little naval content, such as this one. These demonstrate wyllie's skill in pure sea and landscape painting as he captures the transient effects of the weather in this part of ireland. Wyllie has used the lower part of the sheet for colour trials and what appear to be 'doodles'. 'lough swilly'. Date: 1889. Dimensions: Sheet: 326 x 463 mm; Mount: 480 mm x 632 mm. Collection: Fine art.
