The apostle and evangelist john is said, according to legend, to have written the book of revelation while exiled on the greek island of patmos. He is depicted writing while seated on a small islet, with an eagle, his symbol, at his side. The trees behind him are arranged in tiers to create an open perspective on an imaginary landscape.
