two men face each other. On the left an allegory of time, naked, winged, the body of an old man with a white beard, hands a stick and a top hat to a bourgeois in a dressing gown, sitting on his armchair, wearing a bonnet, silk stockings and black breeches, busy putting on his gloves. Actor, playwright and designer, henry monnier helped illustrate la comédie humaine. His engravings of administrative morals, and especially his play scenes from bureaucratic life, clearly inspired balzac for his novel la femme supérieure, renamed les employés.
