two young men in shirts and vests are playing leapfrog while young women sit sewing. Actor, playwright and designer, henry monnier helped illustrate la comédie humaine. His engravings of administrative morals, and especially his play scenes from bureaucratic life, clearly inspired balzac for his novel la femme supérieure, renamed les employés. The same references to the customs of their time often inspired the two artists in parallel on numerous subjects as we can see in the following extract: "--now, cried goupil, you must no longer count on the inheritance. Ursule is almost seventeen years old, she is prettier than ever; travel forms youth, and the little prankster has your uncle by the right end. There are five or six packages for her to the cars per week, and the seamstresses, the milliners come here to try on her dresses and her things. So my boss is furious.
