Portrait Medallion of Émile Diaz, 1860

Émile diaz (1835-60) was the son of the painter virgile-narcisse diaz de la peña (1808-76), barye's friend and colleague in the village of barbizon. Like his father, émile trained to become a landscape painter; tragically, he died of tuberculosis at the age of 25. Two medallions were made: one was set in the face of émile's tomb at the cemetery of montmartre in paris; the other, this piece, was presented by the grieving father to his friend and patron, alfred sensier. Date: 1860. Place of creation: Paris, France. Dimensions: D: 2 1/4 x Diam: 15 3/16 in. (5.7 x 38.6 cm). Medium: bronze. Collection: Walters Art Museum.
