Field post letters from hans koch, vienna, world war ii, eastern front, 1922-1945 previous letter (1941-06-22) letter no. 21 (1941-06-27) next letter (1941-06-30) envelope: front back text [the plane is crashing towards] us. At the last moment it turns on its left wing and crashes into the forest 100 metres next to us. We ran straight over and had to put out the fire. Once this had happened we were able to take a close look at everything. During the time that this had happened our fighters had shot down all 8 aircraft. When the first reports come home no one will believe the kill figures but it is true. In our sector 300 planes were shot down on sunday alone!! the airspace is completely in our hands. Not a single russian has come since sunday! it is hard to imagine after all so much has been said about the red army. On tuesday, june 24th at 4:15 p. M. I crossed the bug over a pontoon bridge onto russian soil for the first time. Date: 27 June 1941.
