Painted in 1798 by order of elizabeth alexeyevna for her mother, margravine amalia of baden, but remained in the winter palace, and the artist created a second portrait as a gift (without any arguments, l. Nikolenko believes the hermitage portrait to be a replica). Variants: with several altered proportions and turns of the figure - fabre museum, montpellier (l. Reault believes that this is the copy of the margravine of baden); portrait with a landscape background - private collection, paris; three pastel variants - the artist took one of them with her to dresden, the other two remained in st.
