Following the practice of many maiolica painters, and no doubt the demands of his patrons, avelli sent this plate to gubbio to receive the distinctive ruby-red-colored luster available only in maestro giorgio's workshop. The plate was signed twice: by xanto avelli (who also dated it) and then by the lusterer. The subject-the school of the famous greek philosopher xenocrates, a disciple of plato-can be identified from an inscription on a book in the scene itself and through the reference on the back of the plate. Date: 1533 (Renaissance). Place of creation: Gubbio, Italy. Dimensions: 2.5 × 26.4 cm (0.9 × 10.3 in). Medium: earthenware. Collection: Walters Art Museum. Workshop of Giorgio Andreoli - Plate with the School of Xenocrates - Walters 481362
