According to catholic theology, mary was "taken up into heaven" by the power of god, just like enoch and elijah. In the center of the composition, the virgin mary is carried on a crescent moon supported by small angels. Mary, facing the viewer, holds a lily in her hand. Above it is the holy trinity: god the father, christ the son of god, and a dove symbol of the holy spirit. In the top there are heads and figures of angels. At the bottom, under mary's feet, figures of saints. The composition of the painting refers to the scene of "the coronation of the virgin mary" by rubens from the musee de bruxelles in brussels. The painting is in warm tones, painted by matejko with free brushstrokes. Object Type: painting. Date: 1875. Dimensions: height: 45.5 cm (17.9 in); width: 24 cm (9.4 in). Medium: oil on panel.
