L'Aumône, Charles Philibert de Lasteyrie, between 1817 and 1818

An elderly man in a skull cap and monk's habit is seated to left in a street or courtyard leading to a shrine to the virgin; he holds out a vessel into which a woman carrying an infant on her back and a baby in a basket balanced on her head, drops a coin, a basket on the ground nearby; a barefoot child with a head covering kneels next to the man, who is pointing witrh his free hand; at the end of the street to right, pifferari stand in front of the shrine, blowing into their instruments, one visible and resembling a bagpipe; on the wall behind the older man a pious image surmounted by a cross, and below it a small shelf with a candle.
