Le Bucheron et l'Arbre de liberté, 1849

Le Bucheron et l'Arbre de liberté, 1849

"the woodcutter and the tree of liberty (fable) an old woodcutter named odilon had taken a dislike to a tree planted in front of his window. It was a poplar from february. This tree brought back cruel memories to poor odilon. He sent for his friend faucher, who also hated poplars, and they both resolved to put an end to these accursed trees. As both had friends in the government, they obtained that all the poplars be uprooted, under the pretext that they were dead and that their branches would be used to heat poor families during the winter. Odilon, at the height of his wishes, wanted to put his hand to the work himself. Now it happened that the poplar he had sawed crushed him in his fall. This proves that we must not touch the trees planted by the people. ". Date: 1849.
