the theme of the "morning prayer", which evokes a devotion particularly recommended by the reformed church, was undoubtedly inspired by greuze by his links with protestantism. Historical commentary:
"the morning prayer" from the cognacq-jay museum, of very nice quality, is certainly at least an excellent workshop copy of the painting on the same subject preserved in montpellier at the fabre museum, painted by jean-baptiste greuze around 1775-1780, but it is not unreasonable to see a replica in the latter's own hand. There are several known copies of this work, of more or less good quality (cf. Burollet, thérèse, 2004, p. 142-143). “morning prayer” inspired greuze after 1780 to create many “heads of expression”, imitated by his students. Mode of acquisition: legacy
