iconographic description:
castings of putti, interior of the saint-sulpice church, place saint-sulpice, 6th arrondissement, paris. Interior view. Casting of the north portal. Historical commentary:
in the minutes of the old paris commission of may 11, 1905, p. 91: "saint-sulpice church - sculpted groypes of the pediment of the northern portal: / (. . . ) mr. Lameyre, painter, made a communication to point out the existence, in an attic of the saint-sulpice church, of casts of pieces of sculpture which formerly surmounted the pediment of the northern portal of the saint-sulpice church. (. . . ) this is the decoration of françois dumont which was placed in 1724; it was composed, it is believed, of a tiara, with the keys and the three-branched cross placed at the top of the circular pediment and of two groups of children at each end. The stone having decayed and pieces having fallen away, all this decoration was removed in 1875. (. . . ) the 1st sub-commission, leaving aside the question of the price of a re-edification which does not fall within its remit. The wish that the north portal be reconstituted by the restoration of the pieces of sculpture which formed its decoration and proposes the taking of photographs of the castings installed in the attic connecting the two towers.
