The intimate small-format portrait of a. A. Buturlina (late 1790s, tretyakov gallery) is very close to the sentimental portrait images of v. L. Borovikovsky, created in the last decades of the 18th – early 19th centuries. Obvious parallels are seen in the natural, relaxed pose of the figure, the delicate tonal colors, and the landscape background. As an analogy, we can cite the small-format paired portraits of a. A. And e. V. Torsukov (1795, tretyakov gallery). The similarity allowed researchers to conclude that the paired portraits of the buturlins are yanenko's copies of borovikovsky's now lost originals. A. V. Lebedev found information according to which borovikovsky painted the portraits of the buturlins in 1797 and received a prize of 200 rubles for this from the then president of the academy of arts musin-pushkin. The personality of the person depicted in the portrait is remarkable. Count dmitry petrovich buturlin (1763 – 1829) was one of the most erudite people of his time, a bibliophile and connoisseur of the arts. For several years (1802 – 1817) he held the post of director of the hermitage. Buturlin collected two unique libraries. The first of them, which included up to 40 thousand volumes and was stored in his moscow house, burned down during the fire of 1812. The count had a phenomenal memory, allowing him to support a conversation on any topic with quotations from latin and french classics. A lover of music and theater, being a talented performer himself, he invited musicians and singers to his house. His passion for fine art contributed to his close communication with many artists, who sometimes lived in his house for a long time, such as a. Molinari. When he and his family moved to florence in 1817, the buturlins' hospitality was enjoyed by the brothers alexander and karl bryullov, o. Kiprensky, and s. Shchedrin. The count was also interested in scientific research, including all sorts of experiments. The telescope in buturlin's hands in the portrait probably hints at this interest. Both works by yanenko were kept in the buturlin family collection in the dubna estate in tula province until the 20th century. In 1905, they were selected by s. P. Diaghilev to participate in the famous tauride exhibition. D. P. Buturlin was also portrayed by f. S. Rokotov (1793, tambov regional art gallery). Object Type: painting. Date: late 1790s.
