Elsbeth mertens, born elsbeth grumbrecht, purchased the property at erwinstrasse 8 on february 20, 1905. It was built according to plans by the architect emil lorenz and was named villa or grumbrecht house after its owner. During the imperial era, senator grumbrecht was considered the head of the household of the couple who lived on the mezzanine floor and the bel étage. In 1907, retired lieutenant colonel jansen also lived in the house.
