iconographic description:
genre scene. Exterior scene: paris, “boulevart des italians”, facade of “café hard[i]”, trees. The facade of the café has inscriptions in german. Characters: a seated man and woman chat while a dog lies at the man's feet and a little girl leans on the woman's thighs. This child looks at a little boy accompanying a woman from behind and a soldier. A modest woman, holding an infant in her arms, begs from the soldier while her little daughter, on her knees, implores him. Two men, in top hats and carrying a cane and a binocular, look at two seated women. Next to them, a couple is served by a young man. Other men and women appear in the background. Historical commentary:
under the first empire, the ground floor of the hôtel de choiseul-stainville was occupied by the café hardy. Its “fork” lunches inscribed on the door were the most famous in paris in 1814. The café hardy was destroyed in 1839. Mode of acquisition: purchase
