Field post letters from hans koch, vienna, world war ii, eastern front, 1922-1945 previous letter (1943-02-26) letter no. 140 (1943-02-28) next letter (1943-03-02) [imagine! today for lunch we had chicken soup, braised meat with peas, gravy and potatoes] and for dessert raisin pudding with mocha sauce. Are you amazed? well, that only happens once in a while. We always have to fetch the food, and now we didn't have enough dishes for the good stuff. This solved the problem: we fetched the soup in a bucket, the food in the cooking pot and the pudding in the wash basin! back home, you would think that was impossible. But it tasted wonderful nonetheless. Now another day has come to an end, always the same as the next. It is 7 p. M. In the evening. I am writing to my beloved mum. My comrades are playing cards, others are sleeping, it is nice and warm and comfortable in the bunker. As long as we have it like this we can still be happy and we are doing well. One is so undemanding. I am healthy and well. The weather is warm now and it is thawing, the water is already standing in the trenches. If it continues to thaw like this then the russians in the south will also come to a standstill again. - please send something to read if you can! warm greetings and kisses from your hansl. Date: 28 February 1943.
