The work represents saint francis of assisi, the founder of the franciscan order, being in the presence of al-kamil, sultan of egypt. Saint francis, along with other companions, made an evangelizing trip through eastern lands in the year 1219. During their trip they were taken prisoner by the saracens and taken before the presence of sultan al-kamil, in front of whom the saint of assisi preached the christian message.
