In the stock catalog from 1970, the painting was called "an italian shepherd boy driving a flock of sheep". But the painter himself simply gave it the title "a shepherd boy. . " without specifying nationality. As the picture was painted in denmark and the painter had never been to italy, it is unlikely that it would depict an italian shepherd boy. The motif is rather danish. Gertner presumably gave the motif an italian character in order to adapt it to the audience's taste. Object Type: painting. Date: 1838.
