the young woman inscribed on the bark of a tree "llo", the first letters of the name of richard bennett lloyd of maryland with whom she married in 1775 (she later married francis love beckford of basing park). Historical commentary:
the painting in the cognaq-jay museum is a reduced format studio copy, but of excellent quality, perhaps retouched by the master himself, of the "portrait of mrs richard bennett lloyd" painted by reynolds between 1774 and 1776 and exhibited by the artist at the royal academy in london in 1776 (booklet no. 234). This portrait is currently kept in a private english collection. There are at least eleven other versions of the portrait of mrs lloyd, replicas or copies of various qualities (cf.
