In a letter dated april 30, 1891, albert anker wrote to the basel merchant alfred bohny-collin about his work on this painting: "i have started painting a boy sleeping on the hay in the threshing floor in öhl; about 70-80 long and 60 wide. It is nearing completion and if nothing comes in between, it will remain unfinished for a long time. " (quoted in schneider 2003, p. 7) alfred bohny-collin finally purchased the painting directly from the artist in 1897. A charcoal study for the painting is in the oskar reinhart museum at the stadtgarten, winterthur (see illustration in lüthy 1989, p. 69). Object Type: painting. Date: from 1891 until 1897.
