Field post letters from hans koch, vienna, world war ii, eastern front, 1922-1945 previous letter (1943-05-30) letter no. 171 (1943-06-16) next letter (1943-08-16) iv. [she must have set fire to the house out of revenge. There was a strong wind, the fire spread and a second house burned down. Three horses in our quarters were also burned. Our rifles and ammunition were all gone, there was a bang when they exploded. We don't worry about it too much, we have to get new things anyway. The main thing is that we got out of russia safe and sound. Your letters, my diaries, everything from russia are gone. Now we are in our new quarters and are living in the bunker again, the houses are all occupied. The bunker is of course much nicer than the one at the front. Yesterday and today we worked a lot and put in a window. I didn't notice anything at all from whitsun. I worked more on the two holidays than in the four weeks combined! now everything is back to normal and everything is ok. I'm healthy and, despite everything, happy and cheerful! please send me a picture of you and dad! i don't think you have a wallet? well, my beloved mum, i really made an effort today! yes? now i'm going to bed, good night! warmest regards and kisses from your hansl. Date: 16 June 1943.
